No. 7 Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets To No. 2 Midland in GPAC Quarters
FREMONT, NEB. - The No. 7 Hastings College Volleyball team had a tough battle tonight against the No. 2 Midland Warriors in the GPAC Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday. Though it was a great matchup, the Broncos fell in straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 in Fremont.
In a game of runs, Midland got things started in Set 1 with a 3-0 lead, which Hastings followed up with a 4-0 lead of their own.
Both teams would battle, and keep it within a few rallies of each for the rest of the set, with Midland jumping ahead to a 24-21 set point. Rachel Hefta and Majesta Valasek were able to keep the Broncos alive with a side-out and two kills, both of which were with the assistance of Makenna Asher.
Midway through Set 2, an Amani Monroe kill and a Midland attack error put Hastings ahead, 11-9. This momentum swing was short lived, with Midland siding out and going on a 6-0 run to jump ahead, 15-9.
Ava Lovitt filled Hastings with some life after a Hefta side-out kill, with two aces in three rallies, igniting the Broncos bench and players. The Warriors' Taliyah Flores came out to play, though, with four kills in five rallies to put Midland up 24-20 before winning the Set, 25-21.
Hastings came out swinging in Set 3, going on 3-0 run to start, but would be answered with a 5-0 run by Midland. Hastings would see their largest lead of the game on a Peyton Roper kill at 18-13.
Midland would finish the game off strong after the 18-13 deficit, going on a 9-1 run that would all but seal the deal for the Warriors.
Roper led the way in kills for the Broncos with 9. On the other side of the net, Flores led the Warriors with a stellar, 21-kill night. Hastings had six service aces, as well as 12 total blocks (24 block assists).
With the loss, the Broncos will now wait for their National Championship fate. Opening Round would be on November 19, at campus sites.
