Omaha, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team was looking to pick up an upset over No. 12 College of Saint Mary to claim the No. 6 seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament but came up short falling 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 15-8 on Tuesday night.
Despite the loss, Dordt fell to Morningside in five sets which pushed Hastings into the No. 7 seed which may create a doorway into the national tournament with an at-large bid. But that will have to wait as the GPAC tournament now looms.
Set one played out like one would think as both teams really wanted the win and the No. 6 seed in the GPAC tournament as both squads were in a 14-14 tie until Makenna Asher and Rachel Hefta teamed up for a double block. Then an over pass from the Flames gave an easy kill to Marlee Taylor and Hastings had a bit of breathing room at 16-14.
The teams then traded points until it was 20-18 when Majesta Valasek and Amani Monroe teamed up for the double block followed by a kill from Valasek put set one into the hands of the Lady Broncos. Following a service error, Hastings went on to score the final three points of the set led by a Peyton Roper kill, a Dacey Sealey Service Ace and then a double block from Roper and Monroe as Hastings won set one 25-19.
In set, the Lady Broncos got off to a fast start and also held a 19-15 lead late in the set but CSM roared back to make it 22-21. HC eventually had set point at 24-22 but a Makenna Freeman kill made it 24-23. Asher then decided to go outside to Marlee Taylor for the kill as Hastings now had a commanding 2-0 lead.
But the Flames had other plans coming out hot in set three opening up a 14-7 lead and never looked back to keep the match alive winning set three 25-16.
The Lady Broncos were in prime position in set four to seal the win leading 19-16 but CSM went outside to Grace Werner three straight times for kills and the set was all tied 19-19. Hastings did grab the lead back at 22-21 on a Roper kill but College of Saint Mary ran off three straight points to go up 24-22 and eventually won set four 25-23.
Unfortunately, it was all CSM in set five running away with the 15-8 win and the 3-2 victory in the match.
Hastings was led by Taylor as she finished with 16 kills while hitting .310. Valasek and Roper each had 15 kills with Roper hitting .282 and Valasek hitting .188.
Asher led the way with 46 assists, two service aces while also recording 13 digs for a double-double and Miriam Miller finished with a team high 24 digs.
Hastings is now 19-12 (8-8) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Nov. 5 hitting the road to take on Midland with first serve set for 7:00 pm in Fremont, NE.
