Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team dropped a tough match to Ottawa 25-22, 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 15-9 on Saturday evening inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
After dropping the first two sets, Hastings looked like it was on the brink of being swept again by the Braves but the Lady Broncos showed they had some fight.
Things did look a bit bleak trailing 15-11 in set three but Makenna Asher worked the middle as Amani Monroe picked up the kill. Then Asher went outside to Marlee Taylor for the kill to make it 15-13. Back-to-back Ottawa attack errors tied things up as the momentum began to shift.
After the Braves would cling to the lead only to see Hastings come right back to tie the set six times until set three was all notted up 24-24. Asher went out to Taylor for the kill for its first lead of the set and then the duo did it again as Hastings won set three 26-24.
Set four stayed tight and then the Monroe show took over as the set was tied 19-19. Asher went to her three straight times for kills to go up 22-19 and after Ottawa picked up a point after the timeout, Asher went right back to Monroe for the kill and the 23-20 lead. After giving up a point, a service error followed by a Taylor, Rachel Hefta block gave set two to Hastings at 25-21.
It seemed as though Hastings had seized all the momentum but Ottawa came out fast in set five opening up an 8-3 lead en route to its 15-9 win.
Taylor led the way with 16 kill while hitting .174. Monroe finished with 13 kills while hitting .357 as Majesta Valasek added 12 kills and Peyton Roper finished with 11 kills while hitting .269.
