North Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team finished up the Labor Day Classic by falling to Dakota State 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 20-18 on Saturday evening.
Hastings battled through the first two sets winning set one on two Sydney Shell attack errors to take set one 25-23.
Set two came down to an Amani Monroe kill and another Shell attack error to give the Lady Broncos a 2-0 lead heading into set three.
DSU was able to improve its attacking percentage from .083 to .212 in taking set three 25-18
It was set four where the Trojan offense began to flex some muscle hitting .414 for the set in order to force a decisive set five.
With the set tied 3-3, Hastings looked to take control with a nice 4-0 run that was started with a Schnell attack error followed by a Dacey Sealey kill. Lauren Dirks then found Monroe in the middle for the kill and a Sealey service ace forcing a DSU timeout.
Coming out of the timeout Sealey served up another ace and the lead was 8-3. Dakota State managed to come right back to tie things up 11-11 and from there the set would go back-and-forth. Tied 15-15, Dirks and Rachel Hefta blocked the Schnell attack giving the Lady Broncos the 16-15 lead but a service error tied things back up.
Hastings went out to Majesta Valasek for the kill but the Trojans countered with a kill from Brooklyn Grage tying things again 17-17.
Dirks went out to Peyton Roper for the kill and again Hastings had match point but a Roper attack error tied things up.
A Maddi Langerock service ace followed by a Madalyn Groft kill finished off the comeback for DSU winning set five 20-18.
Marlee Taylor led the way with a career high 19 kills while hitting .341. Valasek added 16 kills while hitting .190. Monroe and Roper each added 11 kills. As a team Hastings hit .194 while the Trojans hit .203.
Two stats that really stand out are the block assists as Dakota State had 20 compared to just 10 for Hastings and Hastings finished with five service aces coupled with 11 service errors while DSU had nine service aces compared to just six service aces.
Dirks finished with a career high 55 assists while Miriam Miller led the team with 28 digs. Schnell led Dakota State with 19 kills while Hannah Viet added 15 kills while hitting .517.
Hastings is now 8-3 (0-1) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Sept. 7 as College of Saint Mary comes to town with first serve set for 7:30 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
