Lemke Sparks Offense as Volleyball Defeats Doane
Crete, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team got off to a slow start but the offense really went into full gear as the Lady Broncos defeated Doane 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 on Wednesday night.

Hastings fell behind early in set one but was able to fight off set point two times with a kill from Amani Monroe and a double block from Majesta Valasek and Monroe. But a service error and attack error gave set one to the Tigers 26-24.
Hastings decided to switch things up in set two bringing on Brianna Lemke and did it ever pay off. HC got off to a quick start in set two with a service ace from Makenna Asher followed by a Peyton Roper kill. After Doane tied it at 2-2, Asher went to Lemke for one of her 15 kills which is just one shy of her career high. A kill from Roper and a set error by Jaime Renshaw made it 5-2.
The teams would trade points until a quick 3-0 run opened the lead to six highlighted by a Marlee Taylor kill and a double block from Rachel Hefta and Taylor to make it 16-10.
The Lady Broncos would end the set with a Lemke kill, a block from Roper and Monroe followed by another Taylor kill to win set two 25-17 while tying the match 1-1.
The all important set three ended up being controlled by Hastings when its 6-5 lead jumped to a 13-6 lead. During the run, Taylor, Hefta and Lemke each had two kills as Doane was struggling to slow the HC offense. Doane did make a bit of a late run but a Mariah Sliva service error handed set three to Hastings 25-20.
After hitting .019 in set one, Hastings came back to hit .371 in set two and then .244 in set three but saved its best for last.
The offense revved into high gear in set four hitting .471. The offense really got going right from the start opening up a 6-2 lead behind kills from Lemke, Roper and Taylor. The lead would balloon eight at 13-5 as this run was highlighted by five Lemke kills. Hastings had all the momentum and eased to a 25-16 set four victory.
After that slow start, the offense finished the match hitting .245 while holding Doane to just .122. The front line of the Lady Broncos created plenty of problems for the Tiger offense with 18 block assists.
Lemke again led the way with 15 kills while hitting .467. Taylor had another solid outing with 14 kills while hitting .314. Roper finished with nine kills while Asher added a season high seven kills while hitting .278. Asher also led the way with 42 assists. Miriam Miller finished with 28 digs which ties her career high as she was on point from here defensive position.
Monroe led the way with five block assists as she also had seven kills while hitting .294 for the match. Dacey Sealey led the team with two service aces.
Hastings improves to 14-5 (3-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 24 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with first serve set for 6:30 pm in Sioux City, IA.
