Volleyball Gets Back in the Win Column with Sweep of Saint Francis
North Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team opened up the Labor Day Classic with a sweep over Saint Francis (IN) 25-22, 26-24, 25-16 on Friday evening at the United Sports Academy.
North Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team opened up the Labor Day Classic with a sweep over Saint Francis (IN) 25-22, 26-24, 25-16 on Friday evening at the United Sports Academy.
Things did look a bit bleak in set one as Hastings fell behind 17-13 but a nice 7-2 run brought the momentum back to the Lady Broncos side of the net. That run was sparked by two quick kills from Marlee Taylor. A run of kills started by Amani Monroe followed by Majesta Valasek and Peyton Roper was topped off by a service ace from Lauren Dirks to make it 20-19.
After the Cougars tied things up, Dirks went back out to Taylor for the kill and then received an unexpected kill from Ava Lovitt to make it 22-20. After SFU picked up a point, back-to-back Roper kills set up set point and two plays later, Roper slammed home the kill to finish off the comeback in set one 25-22.
The Lady Broncos fell behind in set two but managed to battle back to tie the set 20-20. But the Cougars looked to have the set-in hand up 24-22 but Roper and Monroe teamed up for back-to-back key blocks tying the set 24-24. Lovitt then connected with Monroe for the kill and then Valasek finished off the Cougars with a kill to steal set two 26-24.
In set three, Saint Francis stayed in touch with Hastings trailing 12-10 but HC began a run that took the wind out of the Cougars sails starting with an attack error from Paige Fortkamp. Roper fired right back with a kill. Two points later Valasek picked up a kill and then a Sophie Stevens service ace made it 16-11 forcing a SFU timeout. Dirks came out of the timeout picking up a kill to make it 17-11 as Hastings eased to the 25-16 victory.
Roper, Valesak and Taylor each finished with 11 kills as Roper led the way by hitting .375.
Dirks finished with a career high 36 assists in her first collegiate start.
For the match, Hastings hit .238 while holding Saint Francis to just .104. Lovitt let Hastings with 12 digs.
With the win, Hastings improves to 7-2 (0-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 3 taking part in day two of the Labor Day Classic taking on Tabor at 9:00 am and then finishing up the day against Dakota State at 5:00 pm in North Sioux City, IA.
