Volleyball Defeats Presentation in Four Sets
Hastings, NE ? The Hastings College volleyball team finished up day one of the Hastings College Classic by defeating Presentation 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20 on Friday evening inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team finished up day one of the Hastings College Classic by defeating Presentation 25-22, 27-25, 23-25, 25-20 on Friday evening inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Just past the midway point of the first set, Hastings was trailing the Saints 16-12 but ran off seven straight points which was started with a key Makenna Asher solo block followed by two PC errors to make it 16-15.
Then three straight kills from Majesta Valasek, Amani Monroe and Asher changed the momentum of set one as the Lady Broncos now led 19-16. Presentation utilized the power of their front line with back-to-back blocks to tie things up 20-20 but two attack errors from the Saints and a solo block from Marlee Taylor pushed Hastings to a 23-20 lead en route to the 25-22 set one victory.
Set two was a solid back-and-forth match up as Hastings held set point at 24-22 but the Saints utilized an attack error and a double block to tie things up at 24. HC fired right back as Asher connected with Peyton Roper for the high-flying attack.
Following a Roper attack error, Hastings took the lead on a Grace Tobin attack error and then Asher finished it off with a kill to take set two 27-25.
Set three saw the Saints erase an early six-point deficit to force set four but the Lady Broncos made sure it wouldn't see a fifth set.
After the teams jockeyed for position, three straight Saint attack errors which included a Monroe solo block opened up a bit of breathing room for Hastings at 15-12. Presentation picked up a Maggie Heesch kill but HC answered with kills from Roper and Taylor to lead 17-13. Presentation would get to within one at 20-19 but Valasek picked up a kill followed by a Saint attack error and a Monroe kill as HC now led 23-19.
Once Hastings had set point, the decision was easy to go back out to Roper for the final kill of the match as Hastings came away with the four-set victory.
Valasek led the way for Hastings with 18 kills while hitting .282. Roper, Taylor and Monroe each finished with 11 kills.
Asher finished with a career high 47 assists and tied for the team lead with 17 digs. Monroe led they way with four solo blocks.
For the match, Hastings hit .221 while holding the Saints to just .112.
Hastings improves to 5-1 and will be back in action Saturday Aug. 27 as Bethel (KS) comes to town with first serve set for 2:00 p.m. inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
