West Palm Beach, FL – The Hastings College volleyball team took on Columbia International in game two of the Chick-fil-a Classic where the Lady Broncos would fall in four sets 26-24, 14-25, 17-25, 25-16 to finish day one 1-1 on Thursday.
Set one was an absolute nail biter as the teams duked it out to the final point. The set was tied 10-10 when the Rams scored three straight on attack errors by HC but the Lady Broncos countered following an Alana Sanjurjo service error. After trading points, Hastings took the lead as Amani Monroe picked up a kill and then had back-to-back solo blocks to make it 15-14.
The teams basically traded points until it was 19-19 and a CIU service error followed by a Marlee Taylor kill made it 21-19 in favor of Hastings as the Rams called timeout. CIU then scored four straight highlighted by a Hadassah Davis kill, a kill from Sanjurjo and a service ace from Kamelia De Jesus to make it 23-21.
Facing set point, Hastings stayed poised as a service error from Sanjurjo made it 24-23 and then Peyton Roper and Rachel Hefta teamed up for the double block to tie the set at 24 which then prompted a timeout from Columbia International.
But back-to-back kiss from Kira Rymer gave set one to the Rams 26-24.
Set two was not very close as CIU ran away with the 25-14 set two win and the 2-0 lead.
Hastings would not go quietly though coming out strong in set three leading 7-6 and then went on a quick 5-1 run to gain some breathing room. Makenna Asher connected with Brianna Lemke for the kill and then Hefta hammered home an over pass to make it 9-6. Then Makenna Asher went right back to Lemke for the kill and then run ended on a Sophie Stevens service ace to make it 11-6.
The Lady Broncos were able to maintain the lead and late in the set got a kill from Majesta Valasek to set up set point and two points later, Asher connected again with Lemke for the kill and the set three victory 25-17.
But it was all Rams in the fourth set as Hastings would drop its first match of the season 3-1.
Roper led the way with a career high 14 kills while hitting .176. Valasek added 11 kills while hitting .167. Asher finished the match with a match high 37 assists while Miriam Miller finished with a match high 24 digs. Stevens led the team with two service aces.
