Volleyball Finishes Chick-Fil-a Classic 3-1
West Palm Beach, FL – Day two finished with a bang for the Hastings College volleyball team as the Lady Broncos defeated Cumberland 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23 to finish the Chick-fil-a Classic 3-1.

Set one did not get off to the start Hastings was hoping for as the Phoenix jumped out to a 9-4 lead. But HC was able to slow the momentum and then flipped it completely on its head midway through the set.
With Cumberland leading 14-10, Peyton Roper took an over pass and slammed the kill to the floor. Then Hastings picked up kills from Makenna Asher, Rachel Hefta and Majesta Valasek to tie things up at 14.
Following a timeout from the Phoenix, Hastings continued the onslaught with an attack error from Laci Reese and then picked up a kill from Valasek to make it 16-14. Then a bad set from Bianca Rodriguez and an attack error from lauren Galven made it an 18-14 lead before Cumberland was able to score.
Now leading 18-16, Hastings went on to score six of the next seven points starting with a Valasek kill, a kill from Asher and a service ace from Valasek. Then Asher and Hefta teamed up for a block and after a service error, Miriam Miller picked up a kill with an attack error from Luciana Arena which made it 24-17.
Hastings finished the set off with a Lemke kill to take the first set 25-20.
Set two had a similar feel to set one as the Lady Broncos trailed 13-9 but another huge run by Hastings flipped the momentum.
The run once again began with a Lemke kill followed by a double block from Monroe and Asher to make it 13-11. After an attack error from Isabella Curcio, the Bronco offense went right back to Lemke for back-to-back kills and the 14-13 lead. Monroe then picked up a kill followed by a block from Monroe and Lemke which forced a Cumberland timeout.
Hastings came out of the timeout where Asher and Monroe teamed up for another block followed by a service ace from CJ Harr to lead 18-13 before the Phoenix ended the run. Cumberland never threatened the rest of the way as Hastings now held a strong 2-0 lead.
The Phoenix showed some grit coming from behind to win set three 25-22.
This setup an epic set four as both teams utilized big runs early only to see the set go into a back-and-forth at the midway point until Cumberland held on to a slim 23-22 lead.
Cumberland went to the middle but Hazel Konkel was turned back with a huge block from Asher and Hefta to tie things up at 23. Lovitt then picked up an ace as her serve caught the tape and found the floor on the Phoenix side to set up match point. Cumberland tried to go outside to Galvan but Asher and Hefta turned her away with a double block as Hastings came away with the four set victory.
Lemke had a career game in her first collegiate season with 16 kills while hitting .317. Valasek added 15 kills while Roper finished with nine kills. Asher finished with five kills while Monroe and Hefta added four kills each. Hefta led the way at the net with six total blocks while Asher finished with five total blocks.
Asher had a match high 37 assists while Miller led the back line with 21 digs. Lovitt led the team with two service aces.
Hastings improves to 3-1 and will be back in action Friday Aug. 26 as Kansas Wesleyan comes to town to take part in the Hastings College Classic with first serve set for 12:00 p.m. inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
