Women's Volleyball Sweeps Past Doane on Pink Night
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team picked up a 25-22, 25-17, 25-21 sweep over the Doane Tigers on Pink Night on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team picked up a 25-22, 25-17, 25-21 sweep over the Doane Tigers on Pink Night on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
With a good crowd on hand the Lady Broncos got off to a nice start opening up a quick 10-3 lead in set one highlighted by a host of attack errors by Doane with two kills from Marlee Taylor and a kill from Rachel Hefta.
The Tigers crept to within two at 14-12 but a Taylor Sluka service error followed by an ace from Miriam Miller and then a kill from Peyton Roper opened the lead back up to 17-12. Doane would keep it tight but Hastings went on to win the set 25-22.
Set two was the best of the night for Hastings hitting a whopping .469 compared to .158 for Doane.
It was a set where Hastings opened up a slim 16-13 lead but a quick 4-0 run put the momentum solely on the Hastings side as Roper started the run with a kill followed by a kill from Makenna Asher. Hefta then picked up a nice solo block followed by a Cassidy Thompkins error and HC was ahead 20-14. The teams basically traded points the rest of the way with Amani Monroe ending the set with a kill from Asher and the comfortable 2-0 lead.
The Tigers took control of set three and held a 17-15 lead when Asher went back to Hefta for the kill which sparked the Hastings offense. Asher then went to the outside to Brianna Lemke for the kill as Doane took a timeout with the set tied 17-17.
Hastings kept up the pressure with a Monroe kill followed by back-to-back Sophie Stevens aces to make it 20-17 before the Tigers finally ended the run. HC then held the 22-21 lead before scoring the final three points starting with a kill from Lemke, then a kill from Majesta Valasek and then Roper finished the night off with a solo block.
Hastings finished the night hitting .209 while the Tigers hit .125. Lemke led the way with 11 kills while hitting .194. Hefta had a solid night with eight kills hitting .412 while also recording three solo blocks. Monroe added six kills while hitting .278.
Asher finished the night with a double-double leading the team with 33 assists while collecting 14 digs. Miller led the way on defense with16 digs.
Hastings improves to 19-10 (8-6) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 29 as No. 5 Concordia comes to town with first serve set for 1:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
