Offense Explodes in Upset of No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team came out hot on black out night upsetting NAIA No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22 on Friday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.

After DWU scored the first point of the night, two DWU attack and kills from Makenna Asher and Peyton Roper put Hastings up 4-1. That lead ballooned to 8-3 highlighted by kills from Majesta Valasek and Roper along with blocks from Amani Monroe and Roper.
The lead would grow to as much as 12 points as Marlee Taylor also got in on the action with back-to-back kills as Hastings eventually led 23-11 en route to a 25-15 set one victory. Hastings went on to hit .342 in set one while the Tigers were held under .100.
It didn't get any better for DWU as Hastings came out swinging in set two. Trailing 3-2, HC rattled off seven straight points as Taylor started things off with a kill. Following an ace from Miriam Miller, the Lady Broncos picked up two kills from Roper and another one from Taylor forcing a timeout from DWU. The run continued as Miller connected with Roper for another kill and then Rachel Hefta and Roper teamed up for a block to make it 9-3.
The Tigers were unable to threaten in this set either as Hastings hit an astonishing .516 in set two to take the lead 2-0.
Hastings didn't look like itself in set three hitting just .149 as the Tigers looked to keep the match interesting winning the set 25-21.
It was set four that turned this match into a dog fight as DWU led 13-10 but Asher went back out to Roper for the kill to make it 13-11. Then Asher went to the other side to Taylor for the kill inching closer at 13-12. HC tied the set 13-13 with a Sophie Stevens service ace.
The team then traded points till it was 17-17 and it was Roper with one of her career high 19 kills giving Hastings the lead for good at 18-17. Sealey served up another ace followed by a Taylor block had Hastings on the brink of the upset.
The Tigers closed to within one but Asher went to the hot hand as Roper hammered one home and Taylor followed suit with a kill of her own to make it 23-20. With DWU paying so much attention to the outside hitters, Asher went middle to Hefta as she got the kill to end the set 25-22.
Roper finished the night with 19 kills while hitting .548. Valasek had a career high 20 kills while hitting .261 while Taylor added 15 kills while hitting .361. Hefta added five kills as she it .455 for the match.
Asher led the way with a career high 56 assists while Miller led the team with 28 digs. For the match Hastings hit .310 while Dakota Wesleyan hit .211.
Hastings improves to 16-5 (5-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 1 as Jamestown and Ottawa come to town for a triangular. Hastings plays Jamestown at 1 pm while Ottawa and Jamestown play at 3 pm with Hastings playing Ottawa at 5 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
