Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team had to over come some adversity on Saturday in its 18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-29 victory over Bethel (KS) inside Lynn Farrell Arena to wrap up the Hastings College Classic 3-0.
Hastings just did not look like themselves in set one and it showed early when the Threshers ran off six straight points to take a 9-4 lead.
Hastings made it a one point set again at 15-14 but four straight points off two service aces and two attack errors shifted the momentum over to Bethel and they didn't relinquish it again for the rest of the set.
It looked like the pressure may be starting to build early in set one as Bethel jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead but the Lady Broncos stayed poised and next thing you knew, a service ace from Ava Lovitt had the set tied 7-7. Now tied 11-11, the Threshers picked up four straight kills from Mia Loganbill, Julie Wilhite and Kaleigh Guhr to make it 15-11 but a service error by the Threshers ended that run.
Now trailing 17-14, Hastings took advantage of some Thresher miscues and then a kill from Makenna Asher made it 20-17 forcing a Bethel timeout.
Bethel did manage to tie things up 22-22 but Hastings countered with a kill from Amani Monroe, an attack error from Loganbill and then Marlee Taylor ended the set with a kill shifting some momentum back to Hastings.
In the all important third set, Hastings was able to get some breathing room off four straight attack errors from the Threshers to open up an 11-7 lead.
This would prove to be crucial as the teams battled for the rest of the set until HC hung onto a 22-20 lead following a service ace from Landree Merriman. She then came right back with a service error followed by service ace from Asher setting up set point. Asher did it again with another tough serve for the ace and the 25-20 set three victory.
Set three was tight throughout but the Lady Broncos would seize the momentum leading 18-17 following a kill from Taylor following an over pass. This was followed up with a double block from Asher and Rachel Hefta and then an attack error made it 21-17.
After the teams traded a few points, Majesta Valasek hammered home a kill and then Asher picked up her third and final service ace setting up match point where Darian Lowden missed on her kill attempt as Hastings took set four 25-19.
