Volleyball Loses in Four to No. 12 Dordt

It was a frustrating night for the Lady Broncos against NAIA No. 12 Dordt where Hastings had plenty of chances to win the match but ultimately fell short.
Hastings jumped out to a fast start against the Defenders leading by as many as six midway through the first set. But it was an 8-0 run by Dordt that swung the tide from a 15-10 lead for Hastings to an 18-15 lead for Dordt. Hastings battled back to take the 23-22 lead but Dordt went on to score the final three points to take set one 25-23.
It was the same story in set two as Hastings built a 12-8 lead behind the strength of Peyton Roper and Marlee Taylor plus two service aces from Ava Lovitt.
But just as in set one, Dordt went on a big run scoring five straight points to take a 13-12 lead. Hastings would answer with four straight points highlighted by a Miriam Miller ace, a double block from Majesta Valasek and Amani Monroe and a Valasek kill to go up 16-13. HC would eventually cling to a 22-21 lead when Dordt would score the final four points of the set to win it 25-22.
It was the same story in set three as Hastings built a 13-6 lead behind a 5-0 run that was started by a kill from Roper. After a set error, Makenna Asher teamed up with Monroe for a block followed by a kill from Asher with another double block from Asher and Monroe. This time, the Lady Broncos would avoid the bid Defender run and would win set three 25-21.
But in set four, the big run came early for Dordt opening up the early 11-3 lead en route to the 25-19 win to take the match in four sets.
For the match, Hastings hit .274 where the Defenders hit .296. The Lady Broncos were led by Roper with her 17 kills as she hit .295 for the match. Monroe finished with nine kills while hitting .500 while Taylor also collected nine kills while hitting .240. Brianna Lemke finished with seven kills while Rachel Hefta added six kills while hitting .667.
Asher led the way with 47 assists with Miller finishing with a team high 19 digs.
Hastings is now 16-8 (5-4) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 8 heading out to Orange City to take on NAIA No. 7 Northwestern with first serve set for 3:00 pm.
