Women's Volleyball Finishes Ottawa Tournament 3-1 With Sweep of Friends
Ottawa, KS – The Hastings College volleyball team finished the Ottawa Tournament by defeating Friends in straight sets 25-20, 25-14, 29-27 to end the tournament 3-1.

Ottawa, KS – The Hastings College volleyball team finished the Ottawa Tournament by defeating Friends in straight sets 25-20, 25-14, 29-27 to end the tournament 3-1.
Hastings got off to a rough start against the Falcons falling behind 8-2 before Marlee Taylor got things going with back-to-back kills. Following an attack error by Sarah Lazar, Makenna Asher went right back to the hot hand in Taylor to make it 8-6. Then Asher went out to Peyton Roper for two quick kills and then back out to Taylor to take the 9-8 lead.
The set would remain tight as HC clung to a 20-18 lead when Rachel Hefta and Roper teamed up for a block and then the Asher to Taylor connection make it 22-18. The Lady Broncos would eventually have set points at 24-20 when Asher went back outside to Valasek for the set one win.
It would be another fairly slow start to set two as the Falcons held a 7-6 lead but a service error by Rachel Taylor tied things up. Then an over pass gave Valasek an easy kill followed by a kill from Amani Monroe. Lauren Dirks the picked up back-to-back service aces along with an attack error from Cajia Crawford made it 12-7 before Friends could end the run.
Hastings would later push the lead to 17-10 highlighted by multiple Roper kills en route to the 25-14 set two victory.
The Falcons wanted to make sure Hastings was going to have to earn this sweep fending off two match points to tie things at 24.
The teams traded points until it was 27-27 when back-to-back Crawford attack errors ended set three at 29-27 and handed the sweep to Hastings.
This was Hastings' best offensive output hitting .371 for the match while Friends hit .237.
Again, Taylor had an outstanding game with a match high 17 kills while hitting .457. Valasek finished with 12 kills while hitting .360. Roper added nine kills while hitting .235 and Monroe added eight kills while hitting .357.
Asher led the way with 44 assists while her and Dirks each finished with two aces. Miriam Miller finished with 16 digs.
Hastings improves to 13-5 (2-2) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Sept. 21 hitting the road to take on Doane with first serve set for 7:30 pm in Crete, NE.
