Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team picked up another sweep by defeating Briar Cliff 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 on Saturday evening in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.
Hastings was looking for some separation in set one but the Chargers stayed close with Hastings clinging to an 11-10 lead. Makenna Asher then went out to Peyton Roper for the kill and following an Alexis Johnson attack error, Sophie Stevens picked up an ace to make it 14-10 as BCU called a timeout. Asher went to hot hand Marlee Taylor for another kill to make it 15-10 before a service error ended the run.
But this was the separation Hastings was looking for as Briar Cliff couldn't close the gap to more than three for the rest of the set as HC won it 25-21.
Set two had a much different feel to it early as the Charger opened up a 10-5 lead. But the Lady Broncos would not be deterred as Asher connected with Brianna Lemke for the kill. Following a Toria Andre attack error, Asher worked the ball to Dacey Sealey for the kill to make it 10-8. Hastings eventually tied things up at 12 with a kill from Amani Monroe.
Things stayed tight at 16-16 but a quick 3-0 run gave Hastings a little breathing room with kills from Roper, Lemke and Asher. HC went on to take a 2-0 lead winning set two 25-19.
Hastings would eventually take the wind out of the Chargers sails with a 7-3 run going from a 13-10 lead to 20-13. This run was powered by kills from Majesta Valasek, Xhane Greenidge and Lemke plus an ace from Sealey. Hastings easily won set three 25-16.
Hastings was able to spread the wealth offensively as Valasek, Lemke and Monroe each finished with six kills. Monroe finished the night hitting .312 to go along with two solo blocks and an assisted block. Sealy added five kills while hitting .364. Kaitlin Thiebauth had five attacks with three of them being kills as she hit .600.
Asher led the team with 31 assits while Sealey led the back line with 17 digs. Miriam Miller finished with 14 digs.
For the match, Hastings hit .150 while holding BCU to just .054.
Hastings improves to 15-5 (4-2) on the year and will be back in action Friday Sept. 30 as NAIA No. 18 Dakota Wesleyan comes to town with first serve set for 7:30 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
