Bartlesville, OK – The Hastings College women's soccer team lost to NAIA No. 6 Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-0 in the first round of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles got off to a quick start scoring on its first two shots as Joelle Meister got to the loose ball and ripped a shot into the goal in the 3rd minute.
Then a bouncing ball that Sofie Jackson-Pedersen went up for inside the six unfortunately found the head of Laura Maria as she put it into the goal for the early 2-0 lead in the 4th minute.
Things evened out a bit after this and the Lady Broncos had a great opportunity to get one back as a cross found the foot of Dekota Schubert but her shot went just high in the 18th minute.
Neither team really pressed the back line the rest of the way although OKWU owned the time of possession.
The Eagles struck early in the second half when Maria won a battle in the box and put her shot in the back of the net for the 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
After OKWU picked up another goal in the 61st minute, Hastings was able to put a bit of pressure on the Eagle back line as Michaela Fox hit a header that just missed the frame in the 62nd minute. Then Dulce Lopez hit a great shot in the 65th minute where keeper Nera Perez-Mora jumped and barely pushed the ball over the crossbar to keep it a 4-0 game.
Maria would prove why she is one of the best goal scorers in the country as she scored her fourth goal of the game in the 76th minute as her season total now stands at 55 goals.
The Lady Broncos were able to put some pressure on the Eagles getting off 8 total shots and five on goal but just couldn't put one past Perez-Mora.
Hastings ends the season with a 15-3-3 mark as this was Hastings' first trip to nationals since 2019.
