SIOUX CITY, IOWA - The No. 3 Hastings College Women's Soccer had a strong conference test on the road when they played the No. 2 Briar Cliff Chargers in the GPAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday. The Broncos passed the test, facing late adversity en route to a 2-1 overtime win over the Chargers.
Hastings pressured the Chargers early and often on the pitch, recording the first four shots on the games, all in the first 15 minutes of the contest. The final shot of those four was put in the back of the net by Eva Dunker to put Hastings ahead 1-0.
In the 35th minute, Hastings had a strong opportunity to add onto their lead after a Charger foul set Hastings up for a penalty kick. Dekota Schubert took it, but went just wide with it.
The Chargers were able to make adjustments heading into the second half, and it showed as they were in their attacking third for most of the second half. It all culminated into the final 10 minutes, when Hannah Shuttleworth got the equalizer that eventually forced overtime.
In the first overtime, Sofia Gomez-Garcia was able to put Hastings ahead with her fourth goal on the season. This proved to be the turning point in favor of Hastings, who was able to hold Briar Cliff off in the second overtime for the win.
Hastings would get outshot by the Chargers, 14-to-10 (9-to-6 on goal), but were able to capitalize more effectively on their shots. Both goals from Dunker and Gomez-Garcia would go unassisted. Naomi Pedroza led the Broncos with three shots.
The Broncos will face No. 1 Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D. on Thursday to crown the GPAC Conference Tournament Champion. Kickoff is currently TBD.
