Sioux Center, IA – After Dordt scored its second goal in the second half, things looked grim for the Hastings College women’s soccer team on Saturday but they found a way to tie things up to earn the 2-2 draw with the Defenders.
Sioux Center, IA – After Dordt scored its second goal in the second half, things looked grim for the Hastings College women's soccer team on Saturday but they found a way to tie things up to earn the 2-2 draw with the Defenders.
Dordt had the wind in the first half and took advantage keeping pressure on the back line of Hastings for a good portion of the first half. The Defenders nearly got a goal when Avril Baccam's shot bounced off the cross bar in the 27th minute.
Dordt finally broke free with a 32nd minute goal from Karinna Tel as that 1-0 lead held into the second half.
The Defenders struck again when Tel sent a cross into the box that was misplayed by the Lady Bronco defense where Jori Bronner slipped her shot low under the out stretched hands on Sofie Jackson-Pedersen for the 2-0 lead in the 57th minute.
Hastings countered when Dekota Schubert sent a pass to Dulce Lopez at the left side of the 18 and she looped a shot over the outstretched hand of keeper Jenna Wright to make it 2-1 in the 66th minute.
Dordt continued to keep the pressure on the Hastings back line but things turned Hastings way in a hurry. In the 78th minute Tel hit a shot that got past Jackson-Pederson but Gabriella Vinciguerra cleared it off the line and the counter was on.
The ball was eventually cleared towards midfield where Naomi Pedroza sent a long ball deep into Dordt territory and Schubert was flying through the middle of the pitch trying to beat the Defenders to the ball. Wright did beat her to the ball but Schubert jumped into the air blocking the clearance and the ball ended up going into the back of the net for her 17th goal of the season along with it being the equalizer.
Dordt had one more really good chance with a shot in the middle of the box but Jackson-Pederson laid out and made the save as Hastings secured the 2-2 draw. This was critical as it locked up the No. 3 seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament set to begin Wednesday Nov. 3.
The Defenders out shot the Lady Broncos 16-to-9 and 9-to-7 in shots on goal. Jackson-Pedersen had another solid game with seven saves.
Hastings is now 12-2-3 (7-2-3) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Nov. 2 and will host Morningside in the quarterfinals of the GPAC Tournament on Lloyd Wilson Field.
