Season Comes to a Close for Women's Basketball at Doane
Wichita, KS – The Hastings College women’s basketball team had its season come to a close as Doane defeated the Lady Broncos 70-66 on Saturday afternoon.
Crete, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team had its season come to a close as Doane defeated the Lady Broncos 70-66 on Saturday afternoon.
Hastings was down 37-27 at halftime but came out in the third quarter and turned this into a game by going on a 13-4 run to start the half. Lexi Kraft got things going with a three and Rachel Goodon followed a Tiger bucket with a layup of her own to make it 39-32.
Kraft then knocked two down from the free throw line followed by a Mariyah Avila layup as HC trailed by just five at 41-36 with 7:08 to go in the third. Kiernan Paulk would get a layup to go to make it 41-38. Avila then went inside to Goodon as she scored from the low block to make it 41-40 with 5:56 to go in the third.
Things would stay tight from here on out as Hastings eventually took a 59-58 lead on a tough Avila layup with 6:47 left to play. But Doane countered with a layup and a three to go back up four with 5:59 to go.
The lead would stretch to six but free throws from Bailey Kissinger and Avila made it 66-64 with :55 to go. The Lady Broncos were looking for a stop and got it when Mak Hatcliff missed her jumper as the rebound was pulled down by Avila but Rylie Rice stole the ball away and eventually would get fouled. She made both free throws to go up four with :24 to go.
After a timeout, Kissinger attacked the rim and would get fouled as she went to the line and made both as HC trailed 68-66 with :08 to go. But Rice went back to the line and made both free throws to put the game away as Hastings lost 70-66.
Kissinger led the way with 15 points as she was 3-for-8 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. Avila finished with 12 points while Kraft added 11.
Hastings finished the game shooting 36.8 percent (21-for-57) while the Tigers shot 34.8 percent (24-for-69). The rebounding margin favored Doane 48-to-35.
With the loss, Hastings has its season end at 13-15 (9-13)
