Big Second Quarter Propels Women's Basketball Past Bellevue

The Lady Broncos got off to a slow start as the Bruins built a 16-8 lead in the first quarter and led by six heading to the second quarter. Then, Hastings turned up the pressure defensively while also getting hot on the offensive side of the ball.
Tathis Arredondo got things going to start the second quarter with a jumper followed by a 3-pointer from Alyssa Baker from the left wing to make it 16-15. Mariyah Avila then drained a jumper to give Hastings the 18-17 lead as Bellevue called a timeout.
The Bruins briefly took the lead on a Kaylee Denker layup but HC countered with a Rachel Goodon layup to right back on top 19-18 with 6:30 to go in the half.
After a defensive stop gave Hastings a chance to add to the lead and they did just that as Baker knocked down a mid-range jumper to make it a three point advantage.
Bellevue stayed with the Lady Broncos over the next few minutes but Hastings would close out the half on a 14-0 run after Bellevue got to within one at 23-22 on a Gabby Moore three. The run was started by a three from Avila followed by a free throw from Kiernan Paulk and two free throws from Jordan Koehler. Avila then stole the rock from Denker and went all the way in for the layup and the 31-22 lead.
Back-to-back layups from Paulk and Koehler made it 35-22 with :33 left in the half and then Hastings took advantage of a quick shot and miss from Moore as Paulk ended up wide open on the baseline for the easy layup as HC headed into halftime with a commanding 37-22 lead.
Hastings never looked back taking the victory 62-50 but lead by as many as 19 late in the third quarter.
Goodon led the way with another double-double scoring a game high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and also pulled down 13 rebounds which matches her career high. Paulk also finished with a double-double as she was the other Lady Bronco in double figures with 10 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Avila added nine oints with Baker finishing with seven and Lexi Kraft adding six points. Arredondo, Bailey Kissinger Koehler and Miriam Miller each finished with four.
Hastings finished the game shooting 37.5 percent (24-for-64) while Bellevue struggled from the floor shooting just over 30 percent (19-for-63).
Two main stats that stand out were points in the paint which favored Hastings 30-to-14 and rebounds which also favored the Lady Broncos 53-to-33.
Hastings improves to 6-7 (2-5) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 6 as Morningside comes to town with tipoff set for 2:00 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
