Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team came out shooting lights out and ended up with a 76-51 blowout victory over Morningside on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos just seemed as though they couldn't miss in the first quarter shooting a blistering 80 percent (4-for-5) from behind the arc.
Lexi Kraft went 2-for-2 while Kiernan Paulk also went 2-for-2 in the quarter as the Lady Broncos jumped out to a comfortable 19-7 lead after one quarter of play.
The hot shooting continue to start the second quarter as Mariyah Avila began the quarter with back-to-back threes as HC now led 25-11. The teams would trade a few baskets until Paulk buried another three as the lead was now at 15 with 5:09 left to play. Hastings then crashed the offensive boards as Paulk got a put back to go to make it 32-15 with 4:28 to go in the first half.
The lead then grew to 18 following another Avila three and then Hastings finished the half with an Alyssa Baker three that just beat the shot clock and Avila ended up with a wide open layup right before the half as Hastings took a 42-21 lead into halftime. The Lady Broncos shot nearly 52 percent (16-for-31) from the floor and were 56 percent (9-of-16) from downtown in the first half. The first quarter was rough for the Lady Mustangs shooting just 21 percent (3-for-14) while turning the ball over nine times.
From there, Hastings never looked back en route to the 76-51 victory. You have to go back to the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament back in 2020 when Hastings held Morningside to just 44 points for the last time HC held Morningside to that low of a point total.
Avila led the way with a game high 18 points while Kraft finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and was 4-for-7 from downtown. Goodon finished with another double-double scoring 13 points while pulling down 13 boards including nine offensive rebounds which is a career high. Paulk finished with 11 points while Bailey Kissinger added seven off the bench while pulling down a career high six rebounds.
For the game Hastings shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) while Morningside shot just 32.3 percent (20-for-62). Hastings finished the game shooting 46.7 percent (14-for-30) from behind the arc compared to just 15 percent (3-for-20) for the Lady Mustangs. HC just missed the school record for 3-pointers made in a game which is 16 set by the 2006 team when they went 16-for-26 against Northwestern Oklahoma State and then put up an astounding 48 three point attempts and also made 16 back in Nov. of 2003.
Hastings improves to 7-7 (3-5) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Jan. 10 hitting the road to take on Mount Marty with tipoff set for 6:00 pm up in Yankton, SD.
