Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's basketball team picked up a much needed win by defeating Jamestown 66-45 on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos and Jimmies did not play a great brand of basketball in the first half but that benefited Hastings as HC clung to a 24-22 lead at halftime.
After trading buckets to start the third quarter, Kiernan Paulk was left wide open as she drained a three to go up 30-24. Then Paulk found an open Rachel Goodon for the easy two as Hastings was now up 32-24 with 7:12 to go in the third.
The Jimmies would get the deficit back to four but Tathis found herself open as she put up a rare three and it found its mark as HC led 41-34 with 2:14 to go in the third. Hastings then forced a turnover and Arredondo dropped a pass to Alexis Tapia as she drained a mid-range jumper to put Hastings up 43-34 with 1:25 to go in the third. Arredondo then picked the pocket of Kia Tower and would get fouled as the Jimmies called a timeout looking for answers.
Coming out of the timeout, Arredondo made both her shots from the charity stripe and after a defensive stop, Tapia hit another jumper to put Hastings up 47-34 and would eventually take an 11 point lead into the fourth.
Jamestown would continue to struggle from the floor in the fourth as Hastings continued to build on its lead while also getting defensive stops. At the midway point of the fourth, Miriam Miller and Mariyah Avila each made nice passes setting up easy jumpers for Goodon as the lead grew to 16 points at 54-38.
Then the Lady Broncos were able to build even more momentum when Miller drew the charge to get the ball back as HC was now completely in control. Then Miller stole the ball from Tower going coast-to-coast for the layup as HC now led 56-48 with 5:14 to go. After Miller got a defensive rebound, Goodon found Miller for the easy bucket as Hastings would run away with this one 66-45.
The 45 points is the lowest output of the season for the Jimmies as they shot just 33.9 percent (20-for-59) compared to Hastings shooting 46 percent (24-for-52). To make up for losing the rebounding battle, HC would go 12-for-16 from the line while Jamestown was just 2-for-3. Jamestown committed 19 turnovers which turned into 21 points compared to 13 turnovers for Hastings turning into just four points for the Jimmies.
The Lady Bronco bench played a huge part out scoring Jamestown 31-to-9. Hastings was able to pull away from Jamestown in that third quarter by shooting a blistering 75 percent (9-for-12) from the floor and 60 percent (3-for-5) from downtown.
Hastings improves to 11-11 (7-9) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Feb. 7 hitting the road to take on Midland with tipoff set for 6:00 pm inside Wikert Event Center in Fremont, NE.
Also with the win, Hastings is now just one game back of Doane for the No. 8 spot on the GPAC tournament and two games back of the seven, six and five seeds.
