When fans began to arrive at the game, they noticed something was a bit off about the contest as College of Saint Mary was wearing Hastings' crimson uniforms since their uniforms were back in Omaha. But the game continued and it was the Lady Broncos that came out on fire.
Hastings got things going after Rachel Goodon blocked the shot of Sidney Anderson that led to a Mariyah Avila layup. Then a Goodon steal led to a layup for Goodon as HC was out to an early 4-0 lead. Lexi Kraft would get in on the scoring draining her first three of the game as HC was up 7-0 before CSM got on the board.
After a Bailey Kissinger free throw, Kraft looked to Goodon at the low block for the layup as Hastings was up 10-2 midway through the first quarter. This hot start had Hastings up 27-7.
The Flames would come back with two good quarters of play and eventually got to within seven points at 53-46 with 1:36 to go in the third. HC finished the quarter with a free throw from Goodon and a jumper from Alyssa Baker to lead 56-46 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Broncos quickly erased any illusions of CSM pulling off the comeback as Good stole the ball away from Tia Murray and hit a streaking Avila for a transition layup. Kissinger then took the rock from Skye Giddings which led to another Avila layup plus the fould as she made the free throw as HC was now up 61-46. Tathis Arredondo would then score a layup off a Miriam Miller steal to go up by 17 as Hastings won this one 76-57.
Goodon led the way for Hastings with 16 points while pulling down seven boards. Kissinger added 10 points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists. Avila finished with 10 points while Arredondo added nine and Kraft finished with eight.
Hastings finished the game shooting 44.3 percent (31-for-70) while CSM shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53). The rebounding edge went to the Flames 41-to-37 but turnovers played a huge part as the Flames committed 21 compared to just seven for HC. Hastings scored 26 points off those turnovers compared to just four for the Flames.
Hastings is now 9-9 (5-7) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 27 hitting the road to take on Northwestern with tipoff set for 2:00 pm inside the Bultman Center in Orange City, IA.
