Fremont, NE – The Hastings College women’s basketball team continues to stay alive for a spot in the GPAC tournament with its 81-69 victory over Midland on Wednesday night inside the Wikert Event Center.

The Lady Broncos especially Mariyah Avila came our scorching hot to start the game as Avila drained her first three 3-pointers of the game as HC jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead. Eventually Alexis Tapia would hit a jumper as the lead was at 10 with 3:45 to go in the first quarter. Hastings would end up with a 24-12 lead after the first quarter.
Hastings would eventually grow the lead to as many as 15 points but the Warriors battled back and made a game of it in the third quarter. With 2:59 to go in the third, Aryannah Harrison hit a jumper as HC now led just 45-40 and was looking for some answers on the offensive end.
Kiernan Paulk had the answer as she drove to the hole getting the shot to fall plus the foul as Hastings now led 48-40 after she completed the old fashioned three point play. Paulk once again worked her way to the rim getting another layup to go plus the foul as Hastings now led 50-40 as she missed the free throw.
After the teams traded points, Avila drained another three as Hastings was up 55-42 with :44 left to play in the third quarter. Following two free throws from Paulk, the Lady Broncos carried a 57-42 lead into the final quarter.
Hastings would eventually grow the lead to as many as 24 points before winning the game by 12.
Avila led the way for Hastings with a game high 22 points as she was 8-for-19 from the floor and 6-of-14 from behind the arc. Paulk finished with 15 points as she was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Bailey Kissinger was the other Lady Bronco to finish in double figures with 11 points. Rachel Goodon scored seven points and led the team with nine rebounds.
Hastings finished the game shooting 45.3 percent (29-for-64) while the Warriors shot 44 percent (26-for-59). HC shot 45 percent (11-for-23) from behind the arc while Midland shot 25 percent (6-for-24). Rebounding favored Hastings 39-to-37.
Hastings is now 12-11 (8-9) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Feb. 10 hitting the road to take on Morningside with tipoff set for 2:00 pm out in Sioux City, IA.
