Men's Basketball Falls at No. 20 Midland
Fremont - The Hastings College men's basketball team was unable to overcome an early 20 point deficit falling to No. 20 Midland 77-69 on Saturday afternoon in Wikert Events Center.
Trailing 16-9, Hastings would see the Warriors run off 13 straight points pushing the lead to 20 at 29-9 at the 8:29 mark of the first half.
The Broncos would manage to cut the lead down to 11 points at halftime trailing 38-27.
For the beginning of the second half, the Broncos played evenly with Midland until under the 12 minute mark when Hastings made a little run.
Bart Hiscock (FR/Bennington, NE) would feed a great pass down low to Drew Callaghan (JR/North Platte, NE) to cut the lead to nine at 53-44 and on the Broncos next possession, Jake Hansen (JR/Omaha, NE) connected on a jumper to make it 53-46.
After another stop on defense, Trey Moore (SR/Omaha, NE) hit a pull up 3-pointer to get the Broncos within four at 53-49 with 10:15 to go.
Unfortunately that would be as close as the Broncos would get before falling 77-69.
Hansen led the Broncos with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting while pulling down eight rebounds. Moore added 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
Damon Overton led the Warriors with a game high 29 points on 10-of-19 shooting.
Hastings shot 48 percent from the floor compared to 50 percent for Midland but the difference was at the charity stripe as Midland connected on 16-of-19 as Hastings was 7-of-11 from the line.
Hastings is now 10-10 (4-4) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Jan. 14 hitting the road to take on Dordt with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. in Sioux Center, IA.
