Late Bucket Propels Men's Basketball Over UNK
Kearney - The Hastings College men's basketball team went on the road and picked up its first victory over the University of Nebraska-Kearney since December of 2012 defeating the Lopers 85-83 in exhibition action Wednesday night.
It was a wild ride down the stretch for the Broncos and Lopers as Hastings clung to a five point 82-77 lead with :48 remaining.
Over the next two Bronco possessions, UNK would force turnovers on Trey Moore (SR/Omaha, NE) leading to four points from Yashua Trent to make it an 82-81 lead for HC with :20 to go.
On the ensuing inbound, Rich Williams (SR/Scottsbluff, NE) would get fouled and would make 1-of-2 from the line but UNK's Trent answered once again with a bucket to tie the game 83-83 with :14 remaining.
Moore would get the last laugh as he would attack the basket, draw contact and get the lay-up to fall plus the foul putting HC up 85-83 with just :03 to go.
He would miss the free-throw and the Loper prayer from Trey Lansman missed as Hastings would come away with the victory despite it not counting towards its overall record.
Moore finished the game with a career high 28 points on 7-of-12 shooting including 4-of-6 from downtown and 10-of-12 from the line.
Bart Hiscock (FR/Bennington, NE) added 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting while connecting on 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Jake Hansen (JR/Omaha, NE) and Williams each had 12 points while Connor Musiel (JR/Lincoln, NE) finished with 11 points.
The Broncos finished the game shooting 44 percent but shot better than 52 percent from downtown and nearly 81 percent from the free-throw line.
Hastings will be back in action Saturday Nov. 19 as Morningside comes to town with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. at Lynn Farrell Arena.
