Hastings, NE – The Hastings College women's soccer team was not expecting to be in a battle with the 0-5-1 Waldorf Warriors but found a way to come away with the 2-1 victory on Saturday night on Lloyd Wilson Field.
Just like the men, the women dominated the action all night long but struggled to put shots past keeper Samantha Linteo.
It may have taken more than half an hour but a corner from Megan Lampe would find Dekota Schubert as she headed home her fifth goal of the season off of a defender and just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
With five minutes to go in the first half, it looked like Waldorf may have tied the game as Iveth Guzman sent a cross into the box that eventually got past Jackson Pedersen and bounced off the upright and then was put into the goal but the referee waved off the goal as the Warriors were whistled for offside as the Lady Broncos clung to a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Hastings would keep up the pressure but could not add to its lead picking up nine shots over the first 30 minutes of the second half but could not find pay dirt and then disaster struck in the 80th minute.
Paige Spatorico would send a cross into the box and it looked like Pedersen would snag the ball out of the air but it went through her hands right to the feet of Maria Gonzalez as she put the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer.
Now Hastings went into desperation mode and just two minutes later, luck would be on Hastings' side. First, Sofia Gomez-Garcia broke free in the left side of the box and her shot appeared to bounce off the defenders hand and out of bounds but the ref awarded a corner instead of a penalty. Megan Lampe sent a cross in off the ensuing corner kick that bounced back to Miley Prine as she sent the ball back out to Lampe. She sent another cross into the box that bounced off the leg of No. 2 Zoe Silovich and into the net for the own goal to make it 2-1 with just under 8:00 to play in the game.
Hastings then looked to put the game away in the 85th minute when Dulce Lopez beat keeper Linteo but Silovich was there to kick the ball off the goal line to keep it a 2-1 game.
It was at this time when Waldorf ran out of gas as Hastings held on for the 2-1 win.
The Lady Broncos finished with 27 total shots compared to seven for the Lady Warriors. Hastings also held a 13-to-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Hastings improves to 7-0-1 (2-0-1) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Spet. 27 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with kickoff set for 1:30 pm in Sioux City, IA.
