Mishawaka, IN – For the first time since 2019, the Hastings College men's soccer team picked up a win in the first round of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament by defeating Northwestern Ohio 2-1 on a cold and snowy night.
The Racers were able to pick up a couple of early shots on goal in the early going but Brendan Dally was up to the task but it would be the Broncos that would draw first blood in this one.
As the snow began to fall in Mishakawa, the Broncos would put together a beautiful offensive display following a throw in from Jackson Brown. Brown tossed it into Ryan Lewis where side swiped a pass to David Panter and he found Paul Obrusnik where he worked a beautiful give-and-go with Tyler Mase as Obrusnik would then send a low cross into the box where Lukas Goetz would put the final touches on the play for the 1-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Then mother nature really began to sing as the skies opened up and covered the field with too much snow as the game would go into a delay as it was nearly whiteout conditions. The game would be delayed for just over an hour as even Athletic Director Chris Clements helped shovel the field to get it ready for play. The snow would let up and at 7:30 central time, the game would resume.
Once play resumed, the Racers would work the ball through the middle of the pitch and after it got kicked around, UNOH send a ball to the near side catching Hastings off guard where Jovaunn Ramos dribbled past Dally and put the ball into an open net to tie the game 1-1 with 4:26 to go in the first half.
Throughout the early parts of the second half, the Racers would get the majority of the shots off but couldn't get anything else past Dally as the game carried into the final 15 minutes.
It was here where the Broncos turned the Racers over as Mase saw Goetz take off so he sent a long ball perfectly behind the defense and Goetz beat the keeper to the near side for the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute. Goetz now had eight goals on the year.
From here, the Hastings defense clamped down by not allowing a single shot the rest of the way to send the Broncos to round two of the national tournament.
UNOH held an 11-to-7 advantage in shots and a 7-to-4 advantage in shots on goal but the Broncos had the number that mattered in two goals to one.
Dally finished with four saves in the win.
Hastings moves on and will face NAIA No. 6 Bethel as the Pilots defeated William Penn 3-1 earlier in the day. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm Saturday Nov. 19 in Mishawaka, IN.
