Jamestown, ND – The Hastings College men's basketball team controlled the tempo in the first half but the Jimmies of Jamestown were able to pull away in the second half for the 76-61 victory on Wednesday night inside Newman Arena.
Hastings brought a solid game plan to Newman Arena and executed it well in the first half. It was a very physical brand that was meant to control tempo as the Jimmies can really get out and score.
Down 11-8, Evan Kingston hit a wide-open Tyrique McMurrin in the wing for a three to tie the game with 12:32 to go in the first half. Jamestown then went on a quick 5-0 run before Phil Cisrow made a layup. Hastings had a tough time slowing Mason Walters down as he hit from the low block to make it 18-13. Grady Corrigan came right back with a layup.
The Jimmies went right back to Walters as the fouls began to add up for the Broncos. Danilo Matovic would then get in on the action with a tough layup plus the foul over Walters to make it 20-18 with the old fashioned three-point play. Corrigan then picked Camron Ketchum's pocket and hit a jumper to tie the game 20-20. The Broncos then took its first lead of the game on a mid-range jumper from Kingston forcing a Jimmie timeout.
The teams would trade scores the rest of the way and it would be Jamestown taking the 30-28 lead into the break. But Hastings had four players with two fouls as Walters was a matchup nightmare.
The Broncos battled tough but Jamestown eventually grew the lead to double-digits with the eventual 76-61 victory.
Matovic led the way with 13 points on 6-for-11 shooting while Thomas and Cisrow each finished with 10 points. With Thomas getting to double figures, he's the first player to score in double figures in every game since Brady Lollman pulled off the feat during the 2013-14 season. Corrigan and McMurrin each finished with nine points.
Hastings finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (26-for-58) while the Jimmies shot 49.1 percent (26-for-53). One of the big differences in the game was at the charity stripe as Jamestown hit 17-of-22 while Hastings was just 6-of-8.
The Broncos finished their season with a 15-14 record as this is the first winning season since 2018-19. Hastings also finished eighth in the conference when the preseason poll placed them dead last.
