Seward, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team was able to pull away late in its 93-72 victory over Tabor to finish up the Cattle Classic 2-0 on Saturday afternoon inside Friedrich Arena.
The Broncos were able to build up a double digit lead in the first half and looked to be in control of this one but the Bluejays came out hot to start the second half moving the deficit from 13 points to just six in the first three minutes of the second half.
Karson Gansebom had an answer as he would bury a three to make it 57-48. Tabor countered with a three from Kade Hemmert but Dawson Zenger came right back with a three of his own as HC now led 60-51 with 14:00 to play.
:50 later, Zenger found a wide open Gansebom for yet another three as the lead moved back to double digits at 63-51. Following a Tyrique McMurrin layup, Tabor took a timeout to try and slow the momentum of the Broncos. It didn't work as McMurrin would make a layup on the Broncos next possession plus the harm to make it 68-53 after he made the free throw for the old fashioned three point play.
Tabor was able to get it back within eight one more time but Anthony Thompson would make a couple of free throws, a Reggie Thomas layup and a free throw grew the lead to 79-67 with 6:30 to go. The Broncos would then go on a quick 6-1 run highlighted by two McMurrin layups along with a Thomas layup opening up a 17 point lead at 85-68 as the Broncos would finally put the Bluejays away 93-72.
Thomas was also named to the All-Cattle Classic team for his performance during the classic.
Hastings had five players finish in double figures led by Gansebom with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 5-for-6 from behind the arc while dishing out seven assists. Thomas and Zenger each finished with 18 points on a combined 12-for-19 from the floor.
