Orange City, IA – The Hastings College men's basketball team held a slim halftime lead but Northwestern over came it by defeating the Broncos 74-63 on Saturday afternoon.
It was a first half where the Raider had built a seven point lead but midway through the first half, Hastings was able to get some stops on defense and get some things going on offense.
It started with a Tyrique McMurrin three followed by an Ashton Valentine layup to make it a 20-18 game with 9:26 to go in the half. Reggie Thomas then hit a driving layup to tie the game with just under 9:00 left to go.
After taking a slime 24-22 lead, Evan Kingston drained a three but was answered right back by a layup from Zach LaFave. The lead jumped back to five when Thomas broke free in the lane for another tough layup but LaFave countered with a layup of his own. Northwestern would get a free throw to cut the deficit to two and then Thomas again got to the rack for another layup right before the buzzer as Hastings led 31-27 at halftime.
After Northwestern quickly erased the deficit, the teams would stay locked in a tight match up through the first 9:30 of the second half. After Phil Cisrow connected on a mid-range jumper to make it 44-41, the Raiders went on a 14-3 run in a 2:00 time span to open up a 55-47 lead. And it was that run that Hastings couldn't over come as the Broncos were only able to trim the deficit to five before falling by 11.
Thomas led the way for Hastings scoring 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting while pulling down five boards and dishing out five assists. Grady Corrigan finished with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting including going 4-for-6 from downtown. Danilo Matovic finished with eight points while McMurrin and Kingston each added seven points.
The Broncos struggled from the floor shooting just 35 percent (21-for-60) while the Raiders shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55). Hastings did edge out Northwestern 37-to-36 in rebounds but NWIC won the game by out scoring Hastings 32-to-20 in the paint. There were five total ties and 13 lead changes in this one.
Hastings falls to 12-5 (5-4) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Jan. 11 as Morningside comes to town with tipoff set for 7:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
