Fremont, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team was looking for someone to step up with the loss of Karson Gansebom and Phil Cisrow did just that in helping the Broncos erase a 10 point second half deficit to defeat Midland 68-61 on Wednesday night inside Wikert Events Center.
Things looked pretty bleak when Midland's Jake Rueschhoff hit a three that forced Todd Raridon to call a timeout with 16:47 left in the game. But Cisrow seemed to have the edge Raridon was looking for on the offensive end. First it was Grady Corrigan working the back door for the nice layup from Danilo Matovic and then Cisrow stole the ball on the next possession and went coast-to-coast for the layup as Hastings was within six.
After the Warriors built the lead back to nine, Cisrow would collect the offensive rebound and put it back to make it 47-40 with 12:36 left to play. Then Cisrow blocked the Mason Strong shot, collected the rebound and made another layup on the offensive side as the Broncos were now within five at 47-42.
Now that Cisrow and the Bronco defense kept Hastings in the game, Reggie Thomas started the game strong scoring seven points in the first five minutes but didn't score again until he drained a three to make it 47-45 with 11:39 to play. You could feel the momentum shift in the game and even though Strong picked up a layup, Cisrow answered right back with a layup to keep it a two point game.
The Broncos would finally take the lead when Tyrique McMurrin scored from the block to go up 50-49 with 9:05 to play. After the teams traded buckets, Cisrow hit a wide open Thomas on the wing as he drained his second three of the game to put HC up 55-51 with 6:00 to go. The Warriors would make it a two point game but Hastings needed someone else to step up and Evan Kingston did just that catching the ball on the wing from Corrigan and buried his second three of the contest to go up 58-53 with 4:41 to go.
Then after Jake Orr turned the ball over, Thomas hit a dagger of a three to make it 61-53 with 3:54 left to play. Cisrow made it a 10 point lead on the next possession attacking the rim and getting the tough layup to go as Midland struggled to find an answer as the Broncos eventually took the 68-61 victory.
Thomas led the way with 17 points but just on 6-of-17 shooting but did pull down eight boards while Cisrow finished with a double-double with 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting and 12 rebounds. Kingston added nine points while McMurrin finished with eight.
Hastings finished the game shooting 41.3 percent (26-for-63) while Midland shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62). The Bronco defense really stepped up in the second half holding the Warriors to just 33.3 percent (10-for-30) from the floor and just 7.7 percent (1-for-13) from behind the arc. The rebounding edge favored Hastings 43-to-38.
The Broncos improves to 9-2 (3-2) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Dec. 10 as Concordia comes to town with tipoff set for 3:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
