Men's Basketball Fends Off York in Overtime 110-103
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men’s basketball team had to fend off a late surge by York in order to defeat York 110-103 in overtime inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team had to fend off a late surge by York in order to defeat York 110-103 in overtime inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Broncos built a 13 point lead at roughly the halfway point of the second half only to see the Panthers claw their way back into the game cutting the deficit to three with 6:30 to play.
The Broncos clung to a five point lead with 2:41 to play when Reggie Thomas connected on two free throws. This was followed up with a Phil Cisrow layup to make it 80-71 with 1:55 to play. York then turned the ball over on its next possession and then Karson Gansebom was fouled and went to the line where he made both free throws to make it 82-71 with 1:41 to go.
York had made up its mind to create as many possessions as possible and the plan ended up working by fouling Hastings after a made basket. The problem is, York only missed one free throw while going 6-for-6 from the floor down the stretch including three straight threes to eventually tie the game 91-91. The Broncos got a good look from Dawson Zenger at the buzzer but he missed and the game went to overtime.
The teams traded early baskets until Thomas connected on an and one to make it 96-95 with 3:00 to play. York countered with a three from Trevon Dennis but Zenger came right back with a three of his own to make it 99-98.
After the teams traded free throws to make it 101-100, Hastings forced a Brent Clark turnover with a Zenger steal and then Thomas muscled his way to the rack for the layup and the harm to make it 104-100 with :49 to play. Following a Bronco timeout, Brent would get a layup to fall and the Panthers went right back to the well with sending Hastings to the line to create more possessions. This time it didn't work as Gansebom drained both free throws and Isaiah King missed his next three and Gansebom made his next two free throws as Hastings now led 108-102 with :18 to play.
The Broncos would go on to win the game 110-103. Thomas finished his best game as a Bronco with a career high 36 points on 10-of-19 shooting while hitting 15-of-16 from the charity stripe and dishing out six assists.
Gansebom rattled off 33 points on 9-of-18 shooting, 6-for-10 from downtown and went 9-for-11 from the line. Tyrique McMurrin finished with 12 points and nine boards off the bench while Cisrow finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Broncos cooled off a bit down the stretch after shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half by shooting 44.9 percent (31-for-69) from the floor while shooting 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from behind the arc but won the game by hitting 82 percent (37-for-45) from the line. York finished the game shooting 51.5 percent (35-for-68) from the floor.
The Broncos won the rebounding battle 47-to-35.
Hastings improves to 3-0 on the year and will be back in action Friday Nov. 11 hitting the road to take part in the Tabor Classic with its first game against Tabor with tipoff set for 5:00 pm in Hillsboro, KS.
