Mitchell, SD – The Hastings College men's basketball team lost its second straight game this time 84-68 against Dakota Wesleyan inside the Corn Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Karson Gansebom got off to a nice start scoring the first seven points of the game against The Tigers as the Broncos held an early 7-5 lead. Dawson Zenger would get a bucket to make it a 9-8 game followed by a Reggie Thomas layup to make it 11-8.
Following a Tiger bucket, Phil Cisrow got a tough layup to go and then Danilo Matovic made a layup to make it 15-10 with 13:12 left in the first half. The Broncos later built it largest lead of six behind a Matovic bucket and two free throws from Thomas to go up 20-14.
DWU then went on a 15-6 run to go up 29-26 but Gansebom drained a three to tie things back up with 5:04 to go in the half. DWU would then end the half on a 14-6 run to take a 43-35 lead into halftime.
Once the lead hit double figures, Hastings made one more run at the Tigers as Cisrow would make a layup and then he buried a three after two free throws from DWU's Koln Oppold to make it 62-56 with 9:35 to go.
The Broncos tried to stay in touch with DWU as Tyrique McMurrin scored a layup with 7:17 to go as Hastings trailed 65-59 but the Tigers always seemed to have an answer. DWU built the lead back to nine as McMurrin hit two free throws to make it 68-61 with 5:49 left to play but this would be as close as the Broncos would get the rest of the way as Dakota Wesleyan pulled away for the 84-68 victory.
Thomas led the way with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting while Gansebom added 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Cisrow finished with 11 points on 5-for-10 shooting with McMurrin adding nine points and Dawson Zenger finishing with seven points.
One thing that certainly hurt the Broncos was getting just six points off the bench.
Hastings finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (28-for-57) but shot just 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from behind the arc. The Tigers shot 56.4 percent (31-for-55) and 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from downtown. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 32-to-21.
Hastings is now 8-2 (2-2) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Dec. 7 hitting the road to take on Midland with tipoff set for 7:45 pm in Fremont, NE.
