Men's Basketball Upset Bid Comes Up Short
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men’s basketball team put a huge scare into NAIA No. 20 Morningside but came up a bit short on Wednesday night falling 75-67 inside Lynn Farrell Arena.

The Broncos certainly showed some fight against the Mustangs as the broncos trailed by 14 when Trey Powers hit a three with 16:30 to go in the second half. Hastings stayed calm as Grady Corrigan connected on a jumper followed by a mid-range jumper from Tyrique McMurrin to make it 47-37 with 15:40 to go.
After getting a couple defensive stops, Reggie Thomas hit a wide open McMurrin at the top of the key for three to cut the deficit to three with just under 15:00 to go. At the 14:30 mark, Corrigan buried a three of his own and the Broncos were back in this game trailing 47-43 as the Mustangs took a timeout.
Momentum clearly flowing in the Broncos direction, they did cut it to a two point game on a McMurrin layup but Morningside got an and one form Ely Doble to go back up five with 12:49 to go. A few possessions later and HC still trailing by five, Corrigan hit another three to make it 52-50 and after a defensive stop, Phil Cisrow attacked the rack and got the bucket to go tying the game for the first time since it was 0-0.
After the teams traded baskets, Thomas found Kingston wide open on the wing as he hit the three giving the Broncos its first lead of the game 57-54 with 9:26 to go. From here the teams were caught up in a tight battle as Hastings held a slim 67-65 lead following a tough layup from Thomas with 4:49 to go. But then the run happened for Morningside as the Mustangs finished the game on a 10-0 run and pulled away for the 75-67 win to avoid the upset.
Corrigan led the way for Hastings with 14 points on 5-for-12 shooting including 4-for-8 from downtown. Danilo Matovic added 13 points while going 6-for-11 from the floor while pulling down seven boards. Thomas finished with his first career double-double scoring 11 points while pulling down a career high 12 rebounds. McMurrin had a solid game scoring 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Kingston added nine points of his own.
Hastings finished the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56) and 39.1 percent (9-for-23) from behind the arc while Morningside shot 46.6 percent (27-for-58) and 35 percent (7-for-20) from downtown. The difference in the game was HC was just 6-for-11 from the line while the Mustangs 14-for-18.
Rebounds really favored Morningside 40-to-28 while the teams combined for just 14 total turnovers.
Hastings falls to 12-6 (5-5) on the year and will be back in action Friday Jan. 20 as Dakota Wesleyan comes to town with tipoff set for 6:45 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
