Hillsboro, KS – The Hastings College men's basketball team had been averaging over 96 points per game through its first three games going into Friday nights matchup with Tabor. The Broncos defeated the Bluejays 93-72 earlier this season but this game had a completely different feel to it. It turned into a slowed down game where the Broncos eventually came away with the 62-58 victory to open up the Tabor Classic.
The tempo of this game was much slower than the first one as the both teams would have to rely on its defense to get some stops in order to find a way to win.
The Broncos had built a solid eight point lead early in the second half when Danilo Matovic connected o a jumper with 15:07 to go. Tabor countered with a little 8-2 run to get to within two before Reggie Thomas knocked down a mid-range jumper plus the harm as he made the free throw to slow the bleeding.
The Bluejays eventually tied the game at 47 when Thatcher McClure connected on a jumper with just over nine minutes to play.
The game remained tight when Austin Hilton of Tabor connected on a three to make it 56-54 but Tyrique McMurrin came back with a jumper of his own to put the Broncos up four with 2:18 to go.
Tabor's Hilton came back with a quick jumper but the Bronco offense moved the ball around and freed up Karson Gansebom for the jumper as Hastings now led 60-56 with 1:35 to play.
Tabor made a few changes in its lineup at this time and would get a jumper from Adam Nance to fall to make it 60-58 with just :62 remaining. Hastings worked the clock on its next possession but Phil Cisrow couldn't connect on his jumper and Tabor looked to take the lead but Nance's three missed the mark as Thomas secured the board and would get fouled sending him to the line for a one-and-one. Thomas missed the front end but the ball got knocked out of bounds by Tabor as Hastings retained possession with just :13 to go.
Hastings got the ball to Gansebom and he did make both his free throws to put the game on ice as Kade Hemmert's three missed the mark at the end with McMurrin securing the board as the Broncos got out with the four point win.
