Yankton, SD – The Hastings College men's basketball team fell on the road to Mount Marty 82-78 on Saturday afternoon inside Cimpl Arena.
After a close first half where Hastings held a slim 40-37 lead, it was the second half game of runs where the Broncos were constantly battling back from big leads.
MMU came out of the gates flying going on an 11-0 run to open up a 48-40 lead as Hastings didn't get its first points until Tyrique McMurrin hit a layup with 15:50 to go in the game. The lead would end up hitting nine points before HC made its first run as McMurrin would hit a three followed by a Reggie Thomas jumper to make it a four point game with 11:34 to go.
But, the offense would go cold for Hastings as the Lancers built the lead to as much as 11 points before Thomas hit a three to begin another run for HC. Thomas would then get to the lane and make the layup followed by an Evan Kingston three to make it 65-60 with 6:59 to go. The lead would hold steady for MMU until the 2:06 mark when McMurrin hit a three to bring the Broncos to within two points. Of course Mount Marty countered as Lincoln Jordre broke free for a dunk to make it 75-71 with 1:49 left to play. Four points would be as close as Hastings would get the rest of the way losing 82-78.
Thomas scored a game high 28 points on 9-for-17 shooting and was 4-for-9 from downtown. Grady Corrigan finished with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting while McMurrin also finished with 14 oints on 5-for-9 shooting.
Hastings finished the game shooting 50 percent (28-for-56) but the Lancers shot 56.3 percent (27-for-48). Just like the women's game, a major difference was at the line where MMU connected on 22-of-15 while Hastings was just 10-for-21.
Hastings falls to 13-11 (6-10) on the year and will be back in action Friday Feb. 10 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with tipoff set for 7:45 pm in Sioux City, IA.
