Hastings, NE – The Hastings College men's basketball team improves its win streak to eight games with its 74-64 victory over Dakota State on Monday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
This was a game where if you compared scores, then you would know Dakota State's 2-2 record is not a reflection of the talent on the team. DSU came in shooting the ball well including nearly 40 percent from behind the arc. It would be the Bronco defense that would create issues for DSU as Karson Gansebom, Reggie Thomas and Tyrique McMurrin would pace the Hastings offense.
The Trojans would get off to a quick start jumping out to a 6-2 lead but Thomas would get a tough layup to fall followed by two free throws from Gansebom tied the game 6-6. Then Gansebom buried a three followed by a Thomas layup to make it 11-6. Phil Cisrow then got in on the scoring with a layup of his own followed by a Danilo Matovic finish at the rim as Hastings now led 15-6 before DSU finally ended the run with a Sam Muller layup.
Hastings built the lead to as many as 16 before taking a 42-29 lead into halftime.
The Trojans came out in the second half out scoring the Broncos 9-2 to get to within six points. But McMurrin would end the run with a layup with 15:28 to play in the second half. Cisrow then extended it to double digits while Gansebom made it a 12 point lead with a layup as DSU called a timeout.
The Trojans would get the lead down to single digits only two more times as Hastings came away with the 10 victory. One of those time was when Jace Kelley made a three with :58 to go but Hastings would break the press and Thomas found a wide open McMurrin as he slammed home the breakaway to put the exclamation point on this one.
Gansebom finished with 21 points while pulling down five boards. Thomas had another great game as well scoring 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists along with three steals. McMurrin was the bright spot off the bench with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting while getting eight boards. Matovic finished with eight points while Cisrow and Dawson Zenger each had four points. Cisrow led the team with a career high 13 rebounds.
Hastings finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the floor while Dakota State shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) and just 25 percent (5-for-20) from downtown.
The Broncos dominated the boards 43-to-24 including 14 offensive rebounds.
Hastings improves to 8-0 (2-0) on the year and will be back in action Sunday Nov. 27 taking on Augustana in an exhibition with tipoff set for 1:00 pm in Sioux Falls, SD.
