Volleyball Loses in Five Sets to Mustangs
Sioux City, IA - The Hastings College volleyball team dropped a five set match to Morningside on Saturday evening 25-21, 19-25, 26-28, 25-16, 9-15 inside RVSC - Allee Gym.
Trailing 17-14 in set one, the Lady Broncos went on a 7-0 run as Amani Monroe started the run with two quick kills. Following an attack error from the Mustangs, Jaisee Stinson then found Majesta Valesek for the kill to give HC the 18-17 lead. Then, Stinson went right back to Monroe as Morningside called a timeout.
Hastings wasn't done as Stinson went outside twice to Makenna Asher for quick kills to put HC up 21-17. The Mustangs would keep things interesting getting back to within one at 22-21 but a Lindi Pojar service error gave control back to Hastings. The Lady Broncos then picked up a double block from Asher and Sydney Mullin to give them set point. Stinson then found Miriam Miller for the kill as HC took set one 25-21.
Set two was all Morningside as the two squads headed to a key set three which was tight throughout. Trailing 23-22, Hastings turned to Miriam Miller as she answered with a kill and then Asher connected with Mullin to give HC set point at 24-23. The Mustangs countered with a Sydney Marlow kill but Mullin struck again as Hastings had set point at 25-24.
The Mustangs again answered with two Marlow kills to retake the lead at 26-25 as Alexandra Allard would call a timeout. Asher turned to Grace Branson as she tied things up with a kill. But an attack error by Asher followed by a Mustang kill from Meredith Hoffman to take set three 28-26.
Hastings came out determined in set four scoring the first five points of the set and then leading 14-11, HC made sure there would be a set five. Miller and Monroe teamed up for a block and then two Mustang attack errors made it 17-11. Miller struck again with a kill as Hastings was well on its way to winning set four 25-16.
HC seemed to have all the momentum going into set five but it was the Mustangs that would score the first two points. The Lady Broncos found some life trailing 6-3 going on a 4-0 run as Miller picked up a kill followed by a kill from Branson. Miller then got a service ace followed by a Mullin solo block as HC was back in front 7-6. But two kills from Morningside and three attack errors from Hastings gave control over to the Mustangs as HC dropped set five 15-9.
For the match Hastings hit .177 while Morningside hit .193.
Monroe finished with 13 kills while hitting .455 and also recorded five block assists. Mullin also finished with 13 kills and six total blocks. Miller added 12 kills while hitting .321 as she would finish with a double-double collecting 18 digs.
Asher finished with a triple-double as she led the team with 28 assists while finishing with 11 kills and 19 digs. Branson finished with 10 kills.
HC still has a mathamatical chance at qualifying for the conference tournament but needs a win against Concordia and Doane to lose to Midland. The Lady Broncos hit the road to take on the Bulldogs Tuesday Nov. 2 with first serve set for 7:30 pm in Seward, NE.
