Volleyball Gets Swept by Tigers
Crete, NE - The Hastings College volleyball team dropped two tough sets before finally seeing Doane run away with set three in the 25-27, 25-27, 13-25 loss on Wednesday night.
Hastings was clinging to a slim lead halfway through the first set but the Tigers would not let the Lady Broncos get too far ahead. Eventually the set would be tied 15-15 and the teams duked it out the rest of the set.
That is until Doane grabbed a 24-21 lead having set point before HC climbed right back in. First Makenna Asher (SO/Hastings, NE) found Emily Krolikowski (SR/Cairo, NE) for the kill to make it 24-22. Then an attack error by Kirsten Bures followed by a double block from Miriam Miller (FR/Lincoln, NE) and Sydney Mullin (SR/North Platte, NE) tied things up 24-24. After a service error from Kamri Adler (JR/Hastings, NE), Asher connected with Miller on outside to tie things up again 25-25. But back-to-back kills from the Tigers had Doane take the first set 27-25.
In set two Hastings seemed to be in complete control opening up a 15-6 lead and eventually led 18-10 before Doane made yet another run.
Doane would then cut the deficit to 21-19 before Asher and Mullin teamed up for a double block to make it 22-19. Following a service error from Asher, Krolikowski picked up a kill as Hastings clung to a 23-20 lead. Following a Miller attack error, Grace Branson (FR/Lawrence, KS) picked up a kill and gave HC the set point at 24-21.
Unfortunately a service error, an attack error and a setting error brought Doane right back into the set at 24-24 and then a kill from Gabby Manghini gave set point to Doane. But Asher connected with Branson to stop the bleeding and then back-to-back attack errors gave Doane set two and all the momentum.
The Tigers rode the momentum to its 25-13 win in set three.
Hastings finished the match hitting .092 while Doane hit .229.
Mullin led Hastings with 11 kills while hitting .263. Simonie Mendenhall led Doane with 11 kills while hitting .348.
Miller added eight kills while Krolikowski finished with seven kills.
Asher led the way with 20 assists with Stinson adding 12. Ireland Currely finished the match with 16 digs.
Hastings falls to 11-7 (2-4) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Sept. 29 as No. 17 College of Saint Mary comes to town with first serve set for 7:30 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
