Volleyball Loses Five Setter to No. 16 Dordt
Hastings, NE - The Hastings College volleyball team lost a tough five set match to Dordt 40-38, 17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 8-15 on Friday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
Yes you read that right, the first set went to Hastings 40-38, this is the highest scoring set in Hastings College history as wasn't far from the NAIA record set back in 2004 when Urbana defeated Wooster 46-44. The highest score in HC history was when Columbia beat Hastings 36-34 back in 2019.
The start to the set ws all Lady Broncos scoring the first five points of the match before the Defenders came back with a 6-0 run and then the two teams just duked it out for the rest of the set.
HC was down 36-35 but a Corrina Timmermans service error tied things back up. Then an attack error by Grace Langemeier gave set point right back to Hastings. Danielle Vande Voort picked up a kill to tie things up 37-37 but another service error made it 38-37. Dordt answered right back with another Langemeier kill to tie it up again. Langemeier came up with another big swing but her attack went long to give set point to Hastings and Makenna Asher (SO/Hastings, NE) and Amani Monroe (SR/Colorado Springs, CO) teamed up for a double block to end the craziness at 40-38.
After the Defenders took set two, Hastings looked to be on the brink of going down 2-1 as Dordt held a 20-18 lead in set three, Hastings picked up a point off a Ava VanSoelen attack error. Miriam Miller (FR/Lincoln, NE) stepped up and slammed home a kill to tie things up 20-20. Ava Lovitt (FR/Beatrice, NE) then hit a perfect serve to give the Lady Broncos the 21-20 lead.
Dordt slowed the bleeding with a Timmerman kill but Hastings was not going to be denied as Miller gave Hastings the lead right back at 22-21. Then Haylee Sandman (FR/Wauneta, NE) slammed home back-to-back kills to make it 24-21 before a Vande Voort attack error gave the set to Hastings at 25-21.
Hastings seemed poised to end this match in set four holding a 15-12 lead following a Marlee Tayor, Monroe double block. Dordt then out scored HC 7-2 to grab a 19-17 lead. Hastings picked up a kill from Ava Lovitt plus a Defender attack error to tie things up 19-19. The two stayed tied at 22-22 before a service error gave the lead to Dordt followed by a kill from Langemeier gave set point to Dordt as Hastings called a timeout.
After the timeout, Asher went to the right side as Mulling crushed a kill to make it 24-23. It then took a joust at the net that Timmermans won as Dordt forced a set five winning set four 25-23.
Unfortunately for Hastings, it was all Dordt in set five jumping out to a 9-3 lead en route to winning the set 15-8.
The Lady Broncos finished the match hitting .144 while the Defenders hit .265.
Mullin led the way for Hastings with 13 kills while hitting .276. Asher finished with a triple double with 10 kills, 34 assists and 15 digs. Grace Branson (FR/Lawrence, KS) finished with 11 kills while Sandman added eight kills while hitting a career high .412. Monroe also added seven kills.
