Volleyball Swept by No. 15 DWU
Mitchell, SD - The Hastings College volleyball team took on NAIA No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan falling in straight sets 22-25, 21-25, 17-25 on Friday night.
Hastings got down in set one 22-16 but wouldn't let the Tigers run away with it as HC came back with a Sydney Mullin (SR/North Platte, NE) kill followed by a Makenna Asher (SO/Hastings, NE) service ace to make it 22-18. Then Mullin teamed up with Miriam Miller (FR/Lincoln, NE) for the double block forcing a DWU timeout trailing by just three.
Coming out of the timeout, Grace Branson (FR/Lawrence, KS) and Mullin teamed up for another double block as Hastings trailed 22-20 before a Mariah Gloe kill ended the run. The teams then traded points until DWU's Ady Dwight picked up one of her match high 16 kills to end set one at 25-22 in favor of the Tigers.
The Lady Broncos came out on fire to start set two opening up a quick 5-1 lead as Miller and Dacey Sealey (FR/Hastings, NE) each had two kills along with a Branson kill. DWU answered right back with a 4-0 run to erase the deficit. The Tigers then used a 9-2 run to go from a 13-12 lead to a 22-14 lead. Again with HC trailing 24-17, another late run starting with a Miller kill, Asher then teamed up with Amani Monroe (SR/Colorado Springs, CO) for the double block followed by a kill from Asher and another Miller kill made it 24-21. But, Gloe made sure DWU would take the commanding 2-0 lead with a kill to take set two 25-21.
Set three was never really close as the Tigers opened up a 13 piont lead at 20-7 before taking set three 25-17.
For the match, HC hit .183 while the Tigers hit .273.
Miller finished with a double-double for the Lady Broncos with 11 kills while hitting .348 and also recorded 11 digs. Mullin added eight kills while hitting .227 to with her three block assists. Monroe added six kills and three block assists while Sealey finished with five kills. Ava Lovitt (FR/Beatrice, NE) also added 11 digs while Ireland Currey (SR/Lincoln, NE) finished with nine digs.
Jaisee Stinson (JR/Omaha, NE) finished with a team high 17 assists while Asher added 15 assists.
Hastings falls to 14-9 (5-6) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 16 hitting the road to take on NAIA No. 1 Jamestown with first serve set for 5:00 pm in Jamestown, ND.
