Volleyball Sweeps Past Chargers
Hastings, NE - The Hastings College volleyball team backed up its huge upset of No. 3 Midland by defeating Briar Cliff in straight sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos were in a slim hole trailing 8-7 after the Chargers ran off five straight points but HC answered with a quick 5-0 run highlighted by two Ireland Currey (SR/Lincoln, NE) service aces and two Miriam Miller (FR/Lincoln, NE) kills to go back u p12-8.
HC then took control of the game following another Miller kill. Sydney Mullin (SR/North Platte, NE) got in on the kill parade to make it 15-10. Grace Beranson picked up a kill and then Branson and Mullin teamed up for back-to-back blocks pushing the lead to 18-10 as Hastings rolled to a 25-14 set one victory as Amani Monroe (SR/Colorado Springs, CO) blasted home an over pass to end the set.
BCU kept things close again for a bit in set two when Branson picked up a kill to make it 12-10. Then a bad set from BCU's Sami Wasmund followed by a double block from Monroe and Branson make it 14-10. Emma Foote (FR/Scottsbluff, NE) connected with a service ace to make it 15-10 as Hastings began to gain control of the set.
After trading points, kills from Dacey Sealey (FR/Hastings, NE) and Jaisee Stinson (JR/Omaha, NE) made it 18-12 and then Ava Lovitt (FR/Beatrice, NE) connected with Makenna Asher (SO/Hastings, NE) for the kill to make it 19-12 as HC was well on its way to a 25-14 set two victory.
Briar Cliff hung around in set three trailing just 15-13 following a Maureen Imrie kill but a service error by Abbey Jones followed by a Miller ace and a kill from Mullin gave Hastings some breathing room.
From there, the teams traded points until it was set point when Asher and Monroe teamed up for the double block to end the match as the Lady Broncos earned the sweep over BCU.
Miller led the way for Hastings finishing with nine kills while hitting .750. Branson added six kills hitting .333 while Asher and Monroe each finished with five kills. Asher also led the team with 16 assists
Stinson finished with 15 assists and three kills finishing with a hitting percentage of .750. Currey led the team with 10 digs.
Toria Andre led the Chargers with nine kills hitting .368.
Hastings improves to 14-8 (5-5) on the year and will be back in action Friday Oct. 15 hitting the road to take on No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan with first serve set for 7:30 pm in Mitchell, SD.
