Hastings- After two weather delays in the game prior, the Hastings College men's soccer team continued their undefeated campaign with a 4-0 win over Georgia Gwinnett Friday evening at Lloyd Wilson Field.
The Broncos (5-0) and Grizzlies (3-1-1) started the game evenly matched as both teams were unable to get an advantage to work off of. Finally, in the 34th minute the Broncos were able to break the tie via a Lucas Venegas (SR/Grand Island, NE) goal off the Miguel Mendoza (SR/Denver, CO) assist.
With the momentum on their side, the Broncos were able to score again in the 41st minute as Nick Hinds (JR/Lincoln, NE) found Marc Tautz (JR/Limburg, Germany) to take a 2-0 lead over the Grizzlies going into halftime.
In the second half, the Broncos dominated the Grizzlies despite Damien Austen (JR/Kearney, NE) and Joe White (JR/London, England) receiving yellow cards as in the 71st minute the Broncos struck again with a goal from Daniel Whitehall (SO/Warrington, England) off the assist by Venegas. It took slightly over eight minutes for the Broncos to seal the deal with a Brayant Toro (FR/Cali, Colombia) to Adam Knight (SR/Wakefield, England).
Though the score was 4-0, shots were of a premium in the game as the Broncos outshot the Grizzlies 13-4.
Broncos Head Coach Aaron Champenoy, when asked about what he hopes his team took from this win, said, "It's a big statement for us actually, with the long delays and playing a team like Georgia Gwinnett who's a good team, so to come out and keep a clean sheet and putting four goals against them, I think it just continues to build up a bit of that confidence that we are trying to do."
The Broncos play again Saturday night against Lyon (AR) College with a start time of 7:15 p.m. at Lloyd Wilson Field.
