Mustangs Down Volleyball in Five
Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team could not make it two in a row dropping a five set match up to Morningside 14-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25, 11-15 on Saturday afternoon.
Sioux City, IA – The Hastings College volleyball team could not make it two in a row dropping a five set match up to Morningside 14-25, 19-25, 25-22, 20-25, 11-15 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Broncos dominated the first set and it all began with Hastings leading 10-9. Madison Glenn got things going with a kill followed by back-to-back service aces from Ilse Benne and then back-to-back kills from Kaitlyn Thiebauth.
The lead would then balloon to eight behind kills from Grace Branson and Majesta Valasek as Hastigns easily won set one 25-14.
The Mustangs bounced back in set two to even things up but Hastings would retake the lead in the next set and really grabbed momentum after falling behind 6-2. Hastings would go on 7-0 run beginning with back-to-back kills from Valasek. Another kill from Valasek, three service aces from Makenna Asher and two attack errors made it 9-6 before Morningside called a timeout.
The Mustangs would keep things close at 20-19 but Benne put a kill away followed by an attack error made it 22-19. Then Miriam Miller connected with Benne on the outside for the kill to go up 23-19 as HC won set three 25-22.
But Morningside would use early runs in sets four and five to win the match 3-2.
Valasek led the way with 25 kills while hitting .269 while Benne also finished in double figures in kills with 10. Asher added a double-double with 48 assists and 12 digs. Miller led the team with 22 digs. Thiebauth added eight kills while hitting .333 while Glenn finished with six kills and Branson added five.
For the match Hastings finished hitting .211 while the Mustangs hit .210. Hastings did finish with 10 service aces led by Asher with four and Benne with three.
Hastings is now 8-13 (3-9) on the year and will be back in action Wednesday Oct. 18 as Midland comes to town with first serve set for 7:30 pm inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
