Omaha, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team looked to be in a position to upset NAIA No. 12 College of Saint Mary but would lose in a hard fought five set battle 25-18, 29-27, 14-25, 21-25, 13-15 on Wednesday night.
Makenna Asher and Majesta Valasek teamed up right away for three straight kills to get the Lady Broncos off on the right foot. That lead jumped to nine later in the set behind a service ace from Asher and kills from Valasek, Nicole Haywood and Grace Branson. Hastings held on to win set one 25-18.
Set two was as exciting as it could get. Trailing 23-20, Ilse Benne took advantage of an over pass and hammered it home for the kill to make it 23-21. Following an attack error by CSM's Azaria Green, Asher went back out to Benne for the kill to tie the set 23-23.
Following a service error by HC, Hastings then used a kill from Benne and an attack error by Miranda Ring to set up set point but the Flames countered with a Lauryn Willman kill and a double block from Green and Willman putting Hastings on the ropes. The Lady Broncos came right back with kills from Benne and Valasek to make it 27-26 but CSM had an answer with a kill from Ring to make it 27-27. Then The Hastings defense stepped up to keep points alive as Asher connected with Valasek to make it 28-27. Then the two connected again for the kill as Hastings now led 2-0 and seemed on the verge on the upset.
College of Saint Mary had other plans though running away with set three 25-14 and also took set four 25-21 to force a decisive set five.
After CSM built a slim lead in the fifth set, Hastings and CSM went back and forth all the way to the final point as Hastings made it 14-13 with a kill from Valasek but Ring finished the comeback for the Flames with the kill to take set five 15-13 and the match 3-2.
