Volleyball Downed by No. 11 Columbia in Four
Olathe, KS – The Hastings College volleyball team took on a tough Columbia team and lost in four sets 16-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-13 on Friday afternoon as part of the Labor Day Classic hosted by MidAmerica Nazarene.
Olathe, KS – The Hastings College volleyball team took on a tough Columbia team and lost in four sets 16-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-13 on Friday afternoon as part of the Labor Day Classic hosted by MidAmerica Nazarene.
The Lady Broncos were in a strong spot in set one following a kill from Ilse Benne and then an attack error from the Cougars putting them up 13-12. But CC countered with a 6-0 run and eventually took set one 25-16.
Hastings stayed right with the Cougars in set three as an attack error followed by a double block from Nicole Haywood and Majesta Valasek tied things at 18. Columbia would then take a strong 2-0 lead by scoring seven of the final nine points to take set two 25-20.
HC came out strong in set three as the Cougars struggled to find an answer for Benne and Valasek. The combo accounted for 10 of Hastings' first 18 points as HC opened up a 17-10 lead but Columbia. The Cougars would make a run at Hastings especially when HC led 24-16 as CC scored six straight points to fend off match point before Benne ended things with a kill. Hastings was back in the match trailing 2-1.
Unfortunately, the No. 11 Cougars were too strong coming back to win set four 25-13 to take the match in four.
Columbia hit .301 for the match while holding Hastings to just .157.
Benne led the way with 16 kills while hitting .184 while Valasek added 11 kills. Haywood finished with six kills while hitting .263 with Kaitlin Thiebauth added five kills and Makenna Asher finished with four. Miriam Miller led the team with 21 digs while Benne finished with a double-double with 10 digs. Asher led the way with 31 assists.
Hastings will be back in action Saturday Sept. 2 finishing up the Labor Day Classic against St. Thomas at 10:00 am and then take on MidAmerica Nazarene at 12:30 pm in Olathe, KS.
