Hastings, NE – The Hastings College volleyball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 4 team in the country but ended losing in four sets to Concordia 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 12-25 on Wednesday night inside Lynn Farrell Arena.
The Lady Broncos certainly had some help from its student section as it was blackout night and the students showed out. The decimal level was high for much of the first three sets which were tight which made for some great volleyball.
The two teams were back-and-forth in set one with Hastings holding a steady two to three point lead until the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run that proved to be the difference as CUNE took set one 25-19.
Set two was as tight as it can get as neither team led by more than just a few points until Hastings found a little bit of light and took advantage.
Holding on to a slim one point lead, Makenna Asher worked a set to Kaitlin Thiebauth for the kill from the middle to make it 21-19. Thiebauth struck again from the middle followed by a smooth kill from Nicole Haywood put HC up 23-19. After the Bulldogs made it a two point contest, back-to-back attack errors from Ashley Keck tied things 1-1 as Hastings took set two 25-21.
Again, set three was back-and-forth as neither team could breathe until everything was all tied 18-18. Here, CUNE rattled off the final seven points of the frame and all the momentum was squarely on Concordia's side heading to the fourth set.
From there, Concordia ran away with set four to take the match giving Hastings its first taste of defeat in 2023.
Ilse Benne led the way with 18 kills to lead the match as she hit .146. Majesta Valasek added 16 kills while hitting .200. Asher just missed a double-double with 40 assists and eight digs. Miriam Miller led the team with 12 digs.
Concordia finished the match hitting .397 while Hastings hit .196
