Women's Tennis Sweeps Doubles Point; Falls 4-3 to Doane
(Hastings, NE) – In the first conference match of the season taking place in chilly temperatures, Hastings swept the doubles point, but Doane rebounded by winning four of the six singles matches to defeat the Broncos, 4-3.
(Hastings, NE) – In the first conference match of the season taking place in chilly temperatures, Hastings swept the doubles point, but Doane rebounded by winning four of the six singles matches to defeat the Broncos, 4-3.
The Broncos had a strong performance in doubles, dropping only three games in the three matches combined. Senior Paige Willcoxon and sophomore Kayleigh Cetak were first to finish at #3 doubles, winning 6-0. Juniors Josline Carter and Victoria Harris won 6-1 at #1 doubles and Hastings completed the sweep with sophomores Cara Ansbach and Lexi Benson taking #2 doubles, 6-3, to put the Broncos up 1-0 heading to singles.
Hastings won the first set in five of the six singles matches, but the Tigers were able to force a third set in three of them. Harris pulled out a 6-4 first set at #2 singles and cruised to a 6-0 second set win. Doane made it 2-1 with a win at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Ansbach led 3-0 in the first set at #4 singles, then fell behind 5-4, before winning the final three games of the first set, making it 7-5. After losing the second set 6-1, Ansbach led 2-1 in the third set, but ultimately fell 6-3. In a tight first set at #3 singles, Willcoxon outlasted Doane 7-5 a first set tiebreak. The Tigers won the last two sets however, 6-4, 6-2, to take a 3-2 lead in the match.
At #6 singles, junior Abby Harveson ran away with her match, winning 6-2, 6-2 to tie the match at three. Benson won her first set 6-0 at #5 singles, but Doane grabbed momentum in the second set by going up 4-1. Benson rallied to get within one at 5-4, but the Tigers closed out the set, 6-4. In the third and deciding set, Doane had leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Benson won three consecutive games to tie it at four, but the Tigers won the final two games to take the match, 6-4, and win 4-3.
