(Lincoln, NE) – The women's tennis team won their first dual of the year, going on the road and taking down Nebraska Wesleyan, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
Hastings trailed in each of their three doubles matches, but rallied at #1 and #3 doubles to get the doubles point. Juniors Josline Carter and Victoria Harris, who trailed 5-4, prevailed at #1 doubles in a tiebreak, winning 7-3. Sophomores Lexi Benson and Cara Ansbach lost their match 6-3 at #2 doubles, but senior Paige Willcoxon and sophomore Kayleigh Cetak came back from a 4-1 deficit at #3 doubles by winning four straight games and eventually the match, 7-5. The win at #3 doubles put Hastings up 1-0 after doubles.
"The doubles point started slow for us but I was very proud to see our team battle through adversity and win the point. That really gave us the momentum we needed to get off to a good start in singles. We also had several players compete in tiebreaks, where we won all three of those matches," Head Coach Josh Sodorff said.
Ansbach dominated the Prairie Wolves at #4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1, being the first Bronco to finish their singles match. Harris trailed 3-0 early in her #2 singles match but came back to take the set, 7-5, and breezed through the second, 6-2. Willcoxon led 5-4 at #3 singles, but Nebraska Wesleyan rallied to win the set, 7-5, and won the second to get on the board, making it 3-1.
At #1 singles, Carter began with a quick 6-2 first set and toughed out a 7-5 second set to clinch the match for the Broncos. Junior Abby Harveson, whose #6 singles match started with at the same time as the doubles match and was the second-to-last singles match to end, lost her first set in a 7-4 tiebreak, but turned things around with a 6-3 second set victory and closed out the match with a 10-4 third set tiebreak win. At #5 singles, Benson took the first set easily, 6-0, but the Prairie Wolves forced a third set tiebreak, which Benson won, 10-7, to give Hastings the 6-1 win.
Up next, Hastings is scheduled play at division two opponent Fort Hays State in an exhibition match on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 1pm. The 12pm match against Grand View tomorrow has been cancelled due to weather.
